New report on anti-trans and anti-drag mobilisation in Australia

This new report by the Tackling Hate Lab investigates how online hate links to offline events targeting gender-diverse communities across Australia in early 2023. Drawing from a dataset of over 86,000 posts—primarily tweets—we used AI and big data methods to map spikes in hate speech and coordinated mobilisation.

Our analysis identifies patterns in how Australian far-right networks disseminate hate, and highlights the influence of global actors like Posie Parker and Matt Walsh. We also explore how online anti-politics discourse often surges before offline violence—pointing to a possible early warning signal.

This report shows that online hate doesn’t just respond to events—it can outlast them and spread further, underlining the need for long-term monitoring. We also unpack gender and anonymity dynamics in online hate, and map the geographical spread across states.

By using innovative computational approaches, we aim to spark new thinking on how to detect, understand, and prevent hate-fuelled mobilisation.
