In this video, we discuss whether Islam is at odds with modernity and democracy. Some public intellectuals, like Jordan Peterson and Richard Dawkins, have suggested that some core aspects of Islam are incompatible with modernity, and accused Islam to be a totalitarian religion at odds with Western democratic values. The narrative that Islam and democracy are incompatible, and that Islam is associated with dictatorship, a lack of freedom, and even terrorism, is popular among right-wing extremists. This narrative fuels Islamophobia, hate crime, extremism and even terrorism against Muslims, as in the case of the 2019 Christchurch attack. We discuss this issue with Greg Barton, Professor of Global Islamic Politics at Deakin University. Greg has been active for the past thirty years in inter-faith dialogue initiatives and has a deep commitment to building understanding of Islam and Muslim society. The central axis of his research interests is the way in which religious thought, individual believers and religious communities respond to modernity and to the modern nation state. He also has a strong general interest in comparative international politics. He has undertaken extensive research on Indonesia politics and society, especially of the role of Islam.
